Mobile & Internet connectivity in Leh-Ladakh region

No Mobile Network ?           How will i talk to my family.

No Whatsapp ?                      How will i chat with my friends.

No Instagram/Facebook ?   How will i keep my acquaintances posted : what am i upto.

Not to worry anymore, Leh-Ladakh has improved a lot, with a scope ti improve, in terms of mobile coverage and internet connectivity. Since Leh was a part of Jammu&Kashmir, so as applicable under law, for security reasons, only postpaid connections from other states will work and if you are carrying a prepaid connection of other state, you can use your phone only for clicking pictures and setting alarms. Now, after article 370 got scrapped by central government, and Ladakh becomes an independent Union territory, conditions may change. I will keep you posted if prepaid connectivity gets allowed in Leh-Ladakh region.

PostPaid Mobile & Internet network in Leh-Ladakh :

Postpaid connections from other states as well as from Leh will work properly in most of the areas. Best connectivity is provided by network providers in the order mentioned below –

  • BSNL : BSNL is by far the best network provider in this area. Mobile connectivity works like a charm in Leh city. In Nubra also, you will get decent mobile networks (except in Turtuk). While going to Pangong lake from Leh, your networks will be down most of the time, but at Pangong lake you will get some coverage to make a call but with very bad voice-clarity. At Tso-Moriri also, the condition is same as Pangong. Although, you will be able to send and receive text message at both these places.  However, Internet connectivity of BSNL is pathetic in that area. BSNL is only good for making calls and sending texts. Internet will only work decently in the Leh city and in rest of the areas if you get a some internet connectivity, feel yourself lucky.

  • AIRTEL : Airtel is the 2nd best mobile network provider in Leh-Ladakh region, but with better voice-clarity than BSNL. In Leh city, it works perfectly. In Nubra also, you will get good mobile coverage. Airtel is yet to provide any coverage at Pangong and Tso-moriri. Regarding Internet connectivity, Airtel steals the show. It provides unhampered 4G connectivity in Leh and 2G near Nubra region.

  • JIO : As we all know, Jio is emerging as a leader by providing good connectivity at cheapest rates in Leh as well. Jio started to provide Mobile and Internet solutions in leh in the past 3-4 years only and covered many regions of the Ladakh area. In leh city, Jio provides better 4G than Airtel. In Nubra also, you will get decent 3G jio networks. Jio is working to extend its connectivity to Pangong and Tso-morori. As a matter of fact, even the locals and hotel owners are converting their Wi-Fi connections from BSNL to JIO for better connectivity.

  • VODAFONE & IDEA : Vodafone and Idea haven’t done any remarkable progress in this area. You will get a little less than decent coverage in Leh city only and no other places.

Pre-Paid Mobile & Internet network in Leh-Ladakh :

Pre-Paid connections from other states won’t work in Leh-Ladakh region. Although, you can buy a new pre-paid connection from Leh and it will take its due course of time for activation ( Ranging from 4 hours to 48 hours). Internet connectivity for Postpaid connections is however better than Prepaid connection in Leh-Ladakh region.
