Prashar lake (trek OR no-trek) – Weekend Destination from Delhi !

Don’t have a Long weekend coming ? Can’t afford enough leaves from work ? Prashar Lake is the destination for you.

Situated at about 50 kms from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh – Prashar lake is actually a religious destination but not for all. It is believed that Bhim(Mahabharta) created this lake and it is named after Sage Prashar as he meditated there for a long time. A temple is created along this lake where people (generally Himachali) come to express their love and seek blessings from the God. It is believed that the depth of Prashar lake is still not known.

How to reach Prashar lake

Take a overnight bus or Drive from Delhi/Chandigarh to Mandi,Himachal Pradesh enroute to Kullu/Manali. From Mandi, there are 3 options to reach Prashar Lake :-

  1. Trek – The trek to Prashar lake starts from Village Baggi which is 7-8 kms from Mandi. You can take a bus from Mandi bus stand till Baggi or Hire a taxi. From Baggi, you can trek to Prashar lake which is about 8 kms taking 5 hours. Level of trek is not difficult. Even a beginner can do this trek easily.
  2. Bus – There is one direct bus from Mandi Bus stand till Prasher Lake which leaves at 8:45 in the morning. It will take 4 hours to reach Prashar by Bus. Same bus will depart from Prashar at 1-1.30 PM. But you can confirm the exact time from locals there as the bus timings vary as per the weather conditions.
  3. Taxi – Taxi from Mandi to Baggi will cost you around Rs. 800 and from Baggi to Prashar Rs.1000-1200. If you are 3-4 people, taxi is the easiest and the most convenient option to reach Prashar lake.

Where to stay at Prashar Lake

If you are a budget traveler, you can stay at the temple premises which will cost you only Rs. 20 for the Blanket. You are not liable to Drink alcohol or Smoke near the temple premises.

Otherwise, there are a few camp sites which offer a decent stay. Also, there are 2 Government run guest houses, but you need to book your stay in advance if you wish to stay there. My suggestion would be to stay in camps, enjoying the beauty and calmness of Himalayas.

I stayed at a camp site, managed by EcoTourism department, which is at a distance of about 1-1.5 kms prior to Prashar lake.

This is the perfect place to stay as there will be no people(tourists) around and there are 2 small lakes near this campsite.

The guy running this campsite is a very genuine person who talks in pure hindi language and gives full respect (aadarniya mahodya ji) during conversation. Charges will be Rs. 500-1000 per day(including meals) , depending on the number of people in your group. If you wish to stay there, you can refer my name (Nitin, from Delhi) to get some extra discounts.

What to do while at Prashar Lake

Actually, there is nothing to do there, as such. You can enjoy the peace and calmness of the mountains there. Dhauladhar range is clearly visible from this point. If you intend to trek a little, there is a small 30 mins trek from the campsite which I mentioned above.
